Like many American soccer fans, I appreciate college soccer for what it really is – unwatchable slop. But, occasionally great players come out of said slop including guys like Brian McBride, Maurice Edu, Taylor Twellman, and Brad Guzan. This fall, I am going to attend a few college matches to take a look at some MLS’ top prospects heading into this winter’s draft. I am certainly not a professional talent scout, but that’s not the point. From the looks of recent drafts, plenty of MLS teams don’t have talent scouts either.
So here’s my tentative schedule and players I am going to see and report on:
- Friday, September 5th, Virginia at George Mason – Clearly the player to see here is Chris Agorsor of Virginia. The freshman forward from Baltimore was named all-everything last year, won National Player of the Year, and led the Baltimore Bays to the US Soccer Academy Title. I would be very surprised to see him last more than one season in Charlottesville as he has already received interest from England (I’ve heard Tottenham) and presumably will get a full press from MLS to go Generation Adidas.
- Friday, Sept 26th, Wake Forest at Maryland – There’s a whole gaggle of players to see here including for Maryland; the Red Bull trainee Matt Kassel who nearly went pro early this year, preseason first team All-American defender Omar Gonzalez and probably a few guys I don’t even know about. Wake Forest, the defending champs feature two preseason All-American seniors, forward Marcus Tracy and midfielder Sam Cronin.
- Saturday, October 11th, Connecticut at Georgetown – UConn forward O’Brien White surprised many by declining to leave school early last year and instead deciding to stay in Storrs for his senior year despite capturing the Hermann Trophy. I heard from many that he would have easily been a top 10 pick, maybe even a top 5 pick if he had come out. He has already featured heavily for Jamaican youth teams, though he is also eligible for Canada.
Maybe I’ll be able to tell if your team is about to pick the next Maurice Edu, or the next David Testo.
Is there anyone else out there I am missing? Please note, I am not going to leave the DC metro area. I do this website for free, remember.
